TOWARD A BETTER COLLABORATION BETWEEN RESEARCHERS AND FIRST NATIONS

A day of dialogue on First Nations child and family issues in New Brunswick

Tuesday, June 10th 2014, at 9:00 am, at the Université de Moncton, Pavillon Taillon Room 136 A-B

Event organized by the School of Social Work at the Université de Moncton and the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network, with the partnership of the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate.

First Nations children and families in New Brunswick face deep and persistent inequalities. As highlighted in Bernard Richard’s report, Hand in Hand: A Review of First Nations Child Welfare in New Brunswick, children of First Nations in New Brunswick are up to six times more at risk than non-First Nation children of being removed from their homes and placed in foster care; between four and five times more at risk of being charged as young offenders; and more likely to suffer from chronic health problems, live in homes that require major repairs and be subjected to domestic violence, sexual assault or incest. Added to this is the historical trauma transmitted from one generation to the next since the arrival of Europeans 500 years ago, and whose effects are still being felt today.

This situation is due to complex and various causes that need to be understood and which need to be addressed to ensure a better future for citizens of First Nations, as well as for all New Brunswickers. What role can researchers play? What practices must be adopted to conduct responsible research with participants? Ultimately, how can there be a better collaboration between researchers and First Nation participants to identify the root causes of these inequalities and develop new intervention approaches?
