Workshop
Risky Investigations:  Qualitative Inquiries into Gender, Sexuality, Young People and New Media

This workshop will address what C.J. Pascoe  calls  “risky investigations,” or those research projects that qualitative researchers often avoid or are steered away from because of their challenges. First and foremost, this workshop will address the difficulties, rewards and best practices in studying young people. The workshop will take a Sociology of Youth approach in which young people are understood actors in their social worlds, rather than beings in processes of becoming subjects.  The workshop will also address strategies for researching across lines of difference – such as age, gender and sexuality.  It will also address ways in which qualitative researchers might begin to address how we might get at the everyday nature of young people’s new media use, something that often relies on self-reports, rather than actual practices. Finally, the workshop will begin to unpack how qualitative researchers might investigate those areas of daily life that are often considered private – such as gender, sexuality, and technology use.
