The recently revised mission statement for public education in Ontario reads, in part, “Learners in the province’s education system will develop the knowledge, skills and characteristics that will lead them to become personally successful, economically productive and actively engaged citizens.”  Across the democratic world mission statements for education mimic this one in identifying active or engaged citizenship as one of two or three central goals for schooling.  On the ground in classrooms, schools, and school systems, however, citizenship is a very low priority. This is particularly true in Canada where the allocation of resources to teach for active citizenship lags far behind much of the world.  This talk will explore ways to bring citizenship education in from the margins and make it a central focus of the educational enterprise.
