UNB’s Lunch and Learn – Maggie Simpson Publishes an Academic Paper

Original post found on myUNBnews on January 13, 2015

Rigour of the Peer-Review Process & Open-Access Journals.

Co-hosted by UNB Graduate Student Association and the Sociology Graduate Society.

As academics, publish-or-perish is a reality of the field. This has become a means of profit for a growing number of open-access journals, for whom publication can be bought rather than bestowed.

In a similar vein, the peer-review process as a whole has come under intense scrutiny in both academic and popular media forums, with egregious errors that have passed through the peer-review process. This calls into question the rigour of this fundamental process of academia. From Maggie Simpson and Edna Krabappel successfully publishing, to sentences such as “should we cite the crappy Gabor paper here?” making it to print, how should we approach the publication process of today?

Guest speakers include a head research librarian, and two journal editors:

Dr. Stephen Dutcher, editor of  Acadiensis Scholarly Journal of Atlantic History

Steve Sloan, Head Librarian

Kathryn Taglia, managing editor of Studies in Canadian Literature/Études en littérature canadienne

Alden Knowlan Grad House, University of New Brunswick Fredericton

The event will take place on Friday, Jan. 23 at noon. Complimentary lunch provided; Q&A session to follow.
