This section highlights various funding opportunities that can be accessed to pursue research that addresses our provincial public policy challenges. These include Canada’s federal tri-council granting agencies (SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC) and other funding resources.
Purpose
The Research Workshop Support fund is to assist in capacity building by way of financially supporting a workshop organizer by funding or partially funding a workshop. The workshop must be one with tangible outcomes addressing health research subject matters.
Requirements
• Completion and submission of a Canadian Common CV using the template entitled “NBHRF Template” by the applicant is required. It must be downloaded from the Common CV website and then uploaded as an attachment to the NBHRF application using the “Browse” button on the online application form.
• Your electronic signature page document (obtained by scanning the paper copy after signatures have been obtained) must be uploaded as an attachment using the “Browse” button on the application form. There is no need to submit the paper copy of the signature page; the electronic scanned version will be sufficient.
• Research Workshop Support grants are for a maximum of $5000.

Engage Grants are designed to give companies that operate from a Canadian base access to the unique knowledge and expertise available at Canadian universities (see the List of Eligible Institutions). These grants are intended to foster the development of new research partnerships between an academic researcher and a company that have never collaborated before, by supporting short-term research and development projects aimed at addressing a company-specific problem in the natural sciences or engineering fields.
Please note that applicants seeking funding for travel and meeting activities to establish contact with new potential industrial partners should apply for an Interaction Grant.
Engage Grants support well-defined research projects undertaken by eligible university researchers and their industrial partners. A maximum grant of $25,000 over a period not exceeding six months will be awarded to the academic researcher to cover the direct project costs associated with the research activities needed to address the identified problem. Please refer to the guidelines for the Use of Grant Funds.

Interaction Grants (IG) are intended to give companies that operate from a Canadian base and researchers from Canadian academic institutions an opportunity to meet and identify a company-specific problem they could solve by collaborating in a subsequent research partnership. These interactions are expected to result in economic benefits to Canada.
Interaction Grants provide up to $5,000 over three months to support expenses associated with travel and meetings in order to allow academic researchers to establish contact with one or more companies. Interaction Grants enable researchers and their industrial partners to identify potential research projects.

The objective of a PWG is to bring together academic researchers with non-academic end users and create new partnerships through workshops that develop collaborations addressing research and technology needs identified by the user community. The workshops are intended to generate new academic-industry-government partnerships that will lead to new collaborative research activities.
The workshops must be organized and championed by at least one academic and one non-academic leader. The academic leader may hold an academic appointment or an administrative position at the post-secondary institution. Workshop participation is normally by invitation only and must include academic researchers and members of non-academic end user organizations.
The workshop discussions must strengthen interchanges between the academic and non-academic participants, and focus on forward-looking collaborations rather than review past accomplishments. Workshop discussions are intended to find common grounds among the participants with topics that include:
– research priorities and knowledge gaps from the perspectives of industry, government and post-secondary institutions;
– current research capacity and future needs;
– HQP training and skills needs;
– knowledge/technology transfer potential;
– funding challenges and opportunities;
– existing and potential new collaborations;
– next steps for proceeding toward collaborative activities.
