Dr. Jennifer Welsh, special advisor to UN Secretary General to deliver Josiah Wood lecture at Mount Allison

SACKVILLE, NB — Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary General and University of Oxford scholar Dr. Jennifer M. Welsh will deliver the Josiah Wood lecture at Mount Allison University. The final speaker in the President’s Speakers Series celebrating the Year of Global Engagement, Welsh’s talk will take place Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in Brunton Auditorium. Everyone is welcome.

Welsh’s talk is entitled The evolution of the responsibility to protect: Securing individuals in a world of states. Currently a professor at the University of Oxford, Welsh, is also co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, and Canada Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General.

“Dr. Welsh’s academic and professional experience make her an ideal speaker for Mount Allison’s Year of Global Engagement,” says Frank Strain, economics professor and chair of the speaker series committee for the Year of Global Engagement. “We are pleased to welcome her to campus and look forward to her talk.”

Canadian-born Dr. Jennifer M. Welsh was appointed as special advisor to the UN Secretary General in 2013. A former Jean Monnet Fellow of the European University Institute in Florence, and Cadieux Research Fellow in the Policy Planning Staff of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Welsh is the author, co-author, and editor of several books and articles on international relations, the evolution of the notion of the ‘responsibility to protect’ in international society, the UN Security Council, and Canadian foreign policy.
