It has been said that students are adrift and that college learning needs to be better coupled with goal completion. Yet, many colleges struggle with measuring and aligning program and degree outcomes with course and campus level outcomes. How can you assess learning at all these levels without adding unnecessary burdens or extra workload? What kind of processes can be designed to engage the entire college community in meaningful dialogue about teaching and learning? How do we capture our assessment stories in a report that guides practice and also helps us meet our pledge of quality assurance?
In this session, participants will a) investigate authentic and sustainable models for outcomes-based assessment that shows student achievement at the course, program and degree levels; b) review practices that support course improvement and meaningful dialogue about the assessment results; and c) design reporting processes that fit the culture of their own departments or programs.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate how your course outcomes align with program-level outcomes and campus SLOs
- Select appropriate assessment strategies for your course outcomes
- Design an assessment report to share with your department chair for planning and program evaluation
- Utilize assessment results to improve teaching and learning
