Community Health Clinic wins prestigious award

The University of New Brunswick’s Community Health Clinic (CHC) was awarded a Community Service Learning Award by the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation on June 13.

The Community Health Clinic was developed in 2002 as an interdisciplinary, nurse-managed facility to provide primary healthcare to people without access to primary care, including vulnerable populations.  Community partners and nursing faculty members recognized the need for year-round community healthcare for at-risk populations.

Joan Kingston is the nurse manager of the Community Health Clinic and an instructor in the faculty of nursing at the University of New Brunswick.

The CHC now provides transformative learning experiences and research opportunities for students from a variety of disciplines, and offers continuous primary healthcare – including outreach programs – at a nurse practitioner clinic in downtown Fredericton.

The J. W. McConnell Family Foundation is a private philanthropic organization funding programs that support Canadians in building a more innovative, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient society.

The award was presented at the Community-University Expo 2013 on June 13 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. The award was accepted by David Burns, vice-president (research) on behalf of UNB.
